I'm running Gallery v1.4-pl1 as a module within PHP Nuke 6.5 (NukeCops version).

Here on Nukedgallery overviews of sub-albums within albums are wonderful (check http://www.nukedgallery.net/modules.php?name=gallery ).

Is this a mod? A part of the latest release?

no mod. a config option : "Display album subtrees" or something like that. just open your config.php file in your gallery directory and change that option to "yes".
