Upgrade overview - phpbb2/g1 to phpbb3/g2

Greetings,

I've got a huge phpbb2/g1 install, using the old snailsource g1 integration. I've been putting off the inevitable for too long.

Is it even possible to migrate/upgrade to phpbb3/g2 from where I'm at, keeping all of the owner/permission integration in place? If so, can anyone provide a general overview of the steps to take, and in what order?

Wow! That's the setup I used to use several years ago.

You should be able to do this (famous last words, sometimes easier said than done!). Seriously, though, a lot will depend on your host setup and things such as how long of a script execution time you are allowed.

The phpbb2 to phpbb3 upgrade is relatively painless, depending on what mods, if any, you have installed. phpbb3 gives you the option of importing a phpbb2 database upon installation.

The integration should easily be able to re-synchronize the users.

I would suggest this process after G2.3 is released-
1. Backup everything first!!!
2. Upgrade to gallery 2.3 using the link above and make sure it is fully functional in stand alone mode and all users and albums/items are imported.
3. Upgrade to phpbb3 and make sure it is fully functional and all users/posts are imported.
4. Install, configure the integration per the instructions and sync the users.

If you have a shared host or limited host resources, you might be better off doing all this on a local server by exporting the existing databases, following the steps above on your local server and then importing the databases back on the host server and copying the new files (including the newly created g2data directory).

It will be a fair amount of work, but you should be able to make it happen. Smile

Cool...thanks much for the detailed reply. No problems on the host - went dedicated a year or so ago, it's mine to screw up as I please... Mr. Green

I've done test migrations of phpbb2 to phpbb3 - mostly painless, although I've not yet figured out how to handle some extended profile fields I've added via a phpbb2 mod. I also did a g1 to g2 test upgrade about a year back, to get a feel for things. Standalone migration went OK, but I got sidetracked and never got around to testing any user sync/phpbb integration issues.
