Question for you phpBB3/G2 experts!

Hello everyone,
I need some advice. I've been a Gallery user since 2005 with Gallery1 (now have Gallery2) and love it. My website is a stand-alone gallery and is not embedded. It's just a simple photo gallery that lets users view photos, but only registered users can post comments and download the photos. Aside from that, I have a forum built with Vbulletin.

Here's the problem: My users don't want to have to register for Gallery AND register a different account for using the forum. Therefore, I am in need of a bridge between the two. The problem is is that I am having...to put it gently....a heck of a time getting Gallery2 and VBulletin to "talk" because my Gallery is not embedded. It seems all the mods out there for Gallery2 and Vbulletin are just for embedded Galleries into the VB forum. I am about to give up trying to get Vbulletin and G2 to work.

So, does anyone have ANY advice as to whether other forum software such as PhpBB3 will let me do what I want to do as mentioned above? Again, all I want to do is let my users only have to register ONCE in order to use G2 and the forum--not two separate accounts. I hope this makes sense. I really need some help as to whether there's a solution out there for me somewhere. I've spent about one year trying to solve this and I am not a programmer or very technical inclined--I'll probably hire someone to do this for me, but I need to first know whether PhpBB3 (or phpbb2x!) will let me do what I want to do.
