Stupid install question

Ok, I am sorry about this very basic install question. But it is not clear to me.

1) When I install Gallery2 do I have to install it to:
\modules\gallery2\
And then set it up standalone initially.
And then install the nukedgallery files over this configured install?

2) Or can I install Gallery2 to something like:
\gallery2\
And then insall the nukegallery modifications to \modules\gallery2\

I'm thinking I have to do #2 but when I would like the ability to use the Gallery 2 install as standalone and integrated into phpNuke.
