Safe Mode PHP - Why does Gallery need this?

Here's the deal ... I copied everything up to the site, started the chmod process on files so I could run the config thing, and get a blank page.
I go into the setup dir and see that I can run the setup program but I get a note warning me about the PHP Safe Mode being 'ON', checked out the PHO Sysinfo thing and sure enough it's 'ON'.

So - my quextion is this - pardon my ignorance - but why does it need 'Safe Mode' to be 'OFF'?

I also noticed that the setup program didn't find any ImageMagic or NetPBM stuff ...maybe i need to move this site to one that has what I need ... ?

you will either have to ask your host to install one of those binaries if they're not there, or if they are, what the path to them is. otherwise you will have to move to a new host.
