Is this worth it?

I currently have G2 running and would really like to have PHPBB integrated into the mix with users only having to sign in once. Reading through the discussion board I get nothing but confused.

Is this a fairly easy integration if worthwhile, I am no expert

IMHO:

You may try the g2-phpbb2 package (0.5.10) with only the core mod.
The current version (0.5.11) have issues...

When you got the integration works, you may try my core only upgrade to 0.5.11.
If you are not hurry, wait for the next release will be a better choice Wink

Would this be all I would need for a smooth installation or is alot of internal coding work required?

If you can do other mod by editing the phpbb2 files, then g2-phpbb2 integration package will not be harder, maybe take more time to finish the changes.

My advice: download the 0.5.10 package first, read the document and then make your own decisions Wink
