Im about 75 percent done setting up my PHPNuke site, and I keep reading about how terrible security (and how easy to hack) PHPnuke is.. I'm wondering should I switch to CPGNuke? and whats the difference? Pros' Cons? I'd really like to know before I spend a large chunk of my life adding content to a site thats going to get hacked. Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Eic |

I have been running PHP-Nuke before version 5.0 and have never had a problem. I am currently running 7.5 with Chatserv's patches. You put that on and then I recommend a copy of Sentinel 2.1.0.
Overall 7.5 is pretty darn secure, but it was a long road to that point. CPGnuke has more of a secure base to it but I am not familiar with it but their very zealous users will surely tell you its pure gold. Just to many forks out there.
Provided you keep up to date with patches there are no Nuke problems on any fork though. |

as far as CPG Nuke, I can't give an honest assessment on it's security model. at first glance, it seems to have better out-of-the-box security. i've heard of rumours that it's difficult to integrate gallery into CPG Nuke, but those issues are supposed to be resolved in 1.4.5. _________________

| Ease of use really is all I ask from a CMS and for me, PHP-Nuke is just easy to use. I think though its habit, I've just been using it to long. PostNuke is another good CMS for those are very security wise, although it seems to be lagging a little behind the last time I checked. |

I also agree with Canadian. I have also been using phpnuke from the start, ( the good old days - when most sites looked the same - but never got hacked )
7.5 with chatserv`s patch and Sentinel 2.11 is really all you need and is as a secure as you can get for now. CPG, whilst a darn good fork of phpnuke, is quite secure, however, its more difficult as regards to themes, as themes have to be edited to get them to work, and CPG can have its tempry-menkal attitudes at times, and is more complicated to work out.
A PHPNuke 7.5+ site intergrated with Gallery, is far more the sensible and supported option imho _________________ FlashChatNuke - More than just a default Nuke!

In my persnal opinion CPGNuke is the way.I am using it for some time now and a friend "test" it the hard way - it stands with no problems. He is a good admin with a lot of hack knowhow so he knows. _________________ dr. Steven Dale

I had been keeping up three phpnuke sites over the past two years and even with chatserv patches, two of mine were targeted for a hack job and got to point where host said, change script or lose the account. Well, ordinarily I'd loose my cool, but I too was tired of the constant need to patch phpnuke. With as many sites and mods as I had, I had a part time job maintaining the sites without being able to contribute content.
I finally took the plunge three weeks ago and converted a phpnuke 7.6 to Dragonfly (latest CPGnuke version). Woa, was I impressed. Phpnuke needs a number of mods, IMO to make it perform adequately, ie, googletap and caching. I want to be seen by the indexes and standard nuke script, even latest patched version still works a tad slow to my liking.
Well, out of the box Dragonfly has these features and so much more that would take me weeks of nights and/or weekends to add or modify in a phpnuke installation.
More importantly, it works just fine with Menalto Gallery now. I am still looking for anyone that successfully converted the nuke blocks to work with Dragonfly. _________________

I switched to CPGNuke awhile ago because by the time I had enough security on PHPNuke, it was too slow. I still love CPG, although it's true there are fewer themes and modules (however, it's an active community, so more come all the time.)
Gallery 1.5 works fine with it, but I'm wondering if Gallery 2.0 ever will. _________________ Gallery 1.4.6

You might be able to try the phpNuke integration package on CPGNuke for Gallery 2, but I can't promise anything. The phpBB2 and phpNuke integrations are more than enough to keep my plate full _________________
