I'd be interested to know the development status of any blocks for PHP Nuke 7.7 or above that actually FUNCTION with Gallery 1.5 (especially).

The Random Photo Block breaks after so many images are in your gallery (I can't justify increasing the amount of memory to PHP especially given the suggestions here to increase to 128!!?? Just for a Random Photo??).

The Random Photo Album Select "Test" has been in "testing" since what, 1980? Smile And does not work with 7.7+ and Gallery 1.5.
Also, this block makes use of NukeWrap's Javascript which either should be included in the archive, referenced in a Readme (that does not exist), or something.

Is there another web site that offers working blocks for PHP Nuke and Gallery?

I'm willing to put $$ where my mouth is, and if dari or someone can actually create a block that works with 7.7+ and 1.5 Gallery, that doesn't require a buttload of memory to continue functioning; or, offers a WORKING "select only these albums" to pull from (Module with Administrative Control).

How much $$ would I need to put up for some Module creation with Admin functions that works with Gallery, with corresponding Random and Neweste, Most Popular, Featured blocks...

ALL IN ONE PACKAGE?

Part One
OK, here is the email I sent to Tolwyn, in light of several of his posts here complaining/criticizing this site:
Dari wrote: › Sir-
While it is well within your right to criticize the offerings here at
NukedGallery, please keep one thing in mind when doing so: I run and maintain
this site for free, on my spare time. This includes replying to posts,
offering customized support services to those who request it, upgrading
software as needed, introducing new functionality to the site, and programming
enhancements for Gallery.

My spare time is limited, I just moved into a new house, and my weekends are
consumed with remodelling and renovating. My wife and I are expecting our first
child in 2 months, and a lot of prep work is going into making sure that the
house it ready for her arrival.

The "tone" of your posts ("shoddy block programming", etc) are the types of
things that push owners/maintainers of sites like this to close up shop. You
fail to realize what it takes to run the site, constantly trying to satisfy
everyone at once.

The block listed as TESTING has a forum post directing you how to use it. You
do NOT need whatever "nukewrap" software you are talking about. I do not code
my blocks to rely on third-party software (aside from phpNuke and Gallery, of
course). If you read the relevant post, you'd see how to install/use it. Also,
it is listed as TESTING, which means just that. There are higher priority items
on this site, and I do not have the resources available to me right now to
re-code this block.

As for re-coding other blocks, yes, it will happen. BE PATIENT. I will NOT
program a block to a specific version of phpNuke. When blocks are re-coded,
they will be recoded to work with Gallery 1.5 and a plain phpNuke installation
(I can't account for all the 3rd party additions ie Sentinel, etc that may
adversly effect functionality).

In closing, be patient. Your repeated attacks/barbs at this site and it's
maintainance are growing old, and I'm growing tired and irritated at them. If
you don't like what you get here FOR FREE, so be it. I suppose I could charge
everyone $25 a month for access, thus financing a new development machine. But
I don't. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

This was his reply:
Tolwyn wrote: › I run and have administered web sites for the past 10 years; including being a system admin for an Enterprise Content Management system for a public utility in Washington. I know what it takes to run a successful site, support end-user solutions, moderate forums, etc.

The site is disorganized with little effort to indicate which version of Gallery the blocks will work for. I am not the only person to think so.

The moment people like me that actually pay attention to the site stop coming and stop criticising, is the moment that your site becomes obsolete.

Obviously, I visit the site often, and am enthusiastic about its offerings, and am open to financially subsidize its development. If throwing money at the site and the solution grants me the right to vocalize criticisms, I will do so.

If my opinion is that the programming of the blocks could be better, I will find a more constructive ways to say it; however, I stand by my posts. PHP should not need to be allocated >16MB for a Random Photo Block to function. Pruning the array or a block that actually works (for select albums) that has been in testing for a very long time is not indicitive to instill confidence in your site visitors (including me).

Your download section is obsolete and is difficult to know what versions of gallery they work for.
No metrics have been gathered that I can see to determine what version of gallery the majority of your site visitors are using.
No metrics have been gathered to determine the patch level of Nuke that the site's purpose is fulfilling.

By the way... new houses are a time consuming endeavor. Just got through moving 12 yards of rock to complete our landscaping. Ugh!!

The Auto PHP file in the Testing archive indeed refers to NukeWrap 1.0's Javascript to resize an iFRAME. This is the only package that is available that contains this Javascript code. So, I stand by my statement.

I will be patient; which is why I asked for a development update or some way for visitors like me that are skeptical and critical to be appeased between versions.

I am also willing to subsidize your time in the development of these blocks, and others such as Razor Navi for PHP Nuke.

I don't expect things for free and am willing to pay for them.

I agree with several of his points:
1. The blocks need to be updated.
2. The downloads need to be reorganized stating what works with what Gallery version.

Regarding this statement:
Tolwyn wrote: › No metrics have been gathered that I can see to determine what version of gallery the majority of your site visitors are using.

This is a nearly impossible task. Even the Gallery developers haven't attempted it: http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php? ... file=index . I'm willing to bet a pretty even spread across 1.4 and 1.5 though, with 1.5 gaining ground each day/week/month.

Regarding this statement:
Tolwyn wrote: › No metrics have been gathered to determine the patch level of Nuke that the site's purpose is fulfilling.
This is more impossible than the previous one. There are too many flavors of phpNuke out there with too many customizations, add-ons, etc for me to choose a baseline installation. Lots of nuke newbies will use 7.7 or 7.8. Lots of old-fart nukers like myself use something in the 6.x range. It's this huge disparity and variation in the nuke installations that make universal support nearly impossible. I do my best to build and test on my system.

Part Two
This is where you, the community at large, comes in to play. Simply put, I do not have the time or resources available to re-code all the blocks on this site. I need your help. I have two questions for you:
1. Which Gallery block(s), hack(s), etc from this site do you find most valuable and would you like to see updated to Gallery 1.5?
2. If you are a decent PHP programmer, would you take up the task of updating and optimizing a block (or two)?

Please reply to this post so that a team can be assembled to tackle this task. Thank you for your time.

What he didn't post was that I mentioned to him that I will attempt to word more constructively my criticisms in the future; and that I felt, in my opinion, the moment criticisms and concerns (and downloads, visits, posts about problems, et al) from us end-users cease for web sites such as this, is the moment that the web site would become obsolete and fade into obscurity.

Without status updates, news updates, etc., one could begin to assume that work has ceased. Dari explained to me that I should be patient and that updates were forthcoming. Which is, of course, great news and encouraging. Smile

To answer part 1:

  • Random Photo Block
  • Random Photo (Album Select Block) (most important to avoid out-of-memory problems with LARGE galleries—such as the infamous blank block/page/etc.)
  • Newest Photo Block
  • Featured Photo Block
  • Most Popular Photo Block

Also, a "Featured Album" block would also/may also duplicate nicely with a web comic-type "module/block"; as long as it always displayed the most recent media.
