ReCAPTCHA integrated into phpNuke

Thursday, April 02, 2009 @ 11:13:37 CDT (3080 reads)
You'll notice that the standard phpNuke CAPTCHA display here has been replaced by reCAPTCHA, which you may have seen on other sites like Craigslist. For those of you not familiar with reCAPTCHA, it looks like this:

and is a great spambot fighter. Read this article on what reCAPTCHA is and how it works.

In order to fight the increased number of spambots on this site, I installed reCAPTCHA in place of the standard CAPTCHA during account registration. If you want this done on your site, submit a paid support request. The fee is a flat $25 for the installation.

As you all know, this site, and the first integrations offered on it, are based around PHPNuke. Apparantly, things over in PHPNuke-land have changed. I just received the following email from the former owner/developer of PHPNuke:

What Does Gallery's Move to PHP5 Mean to You?

Friday, July 13, 2007 @ 08:38:40 CDT (2684 reads)
As you've seen here, Gallery will be moving to PHP 5 only in February of 2008. So what does that mean to the users of these integrations?

  • phpBB2, phpBB3, and PHPNuke are all compatible with PHP 5.x.
  • The integrations will be rewritten, if needed, to support PHP 5.x
  • It will be up to you, the users, to make sure that your web hosts have PHP 5.x available for you to use
In short, if your host supports it, you shouldn't have any problem with upgrading to the versions of Gallery 2 requiring PHP 5. I know that February sounds like a long way off, but it will be here before we know it.

Worry not, the integrations here will continue to evolve as the system requirements of Gallery, PHPNuke, and phpBB evolve.

Have you seen how the newest version of Mozilla Firefox supports what they call "Live Bookmarks"? These are simply RSS newsfeeds from the sites which you visit. So, why not utilize this feature on your PHPNuke website? Read this post and find out how you do it.

Note: If you're using Firefox to view this, look in the lower right hand side of your browser window for the RSS feed icon to subscribe to NukedGallery.net's newsfeed.

UPDATED:This forum post has a method on how to publish pending submissions to site admins only via RSS.

Automagic Hosts.deny creation

Tuesday, July 22, 2003 @ 10:44:37 CDT (9712 reads)
Have you read about the real time IP list over at NukeCops? Well, the following perl script takes that list and creates a hosts.deny file that goes in your /etc directory to reject those banned IP addresses from trying to hijack your server. Free (no registration needed) download here: here. MEMBERS: Download the file here and follow the readme for how to use it.

Fix for the ''Read More...'' Link in News Blocks

Thursday, June 12, 2003 @ 09:51:52 CDT (9923 reads)
UPDATE: There was a PHP parsing error in the code I had posted which will produce an error on/around line 849. This is the second "preg_match" statement, searching for the and tags. the correct line should read as follows:

After a couple of headaches caused by PHP's funky text processing, I've finally got the correct version of the code up and running (stupid backslashes)....

RSS Feed From CNN.com

Saturday, April 05, 2003 @ 07:40:13 CST (26701 reads)
UPDATED:The original Perl script had formatting errors. The corrected file is now in place and ready for download.
There have been a lot of requests out there for an RSS feed from CNN.com. Prior to September 11, 2001, CNN maintained such a feed that people could pull from. For whatever reason, they decided to pull this feed after that date. Now, thanks to Dave Jacoby (here is his site), the feed is back.
